The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has recently released its annual white paper, NWP Outline 2025. This comprehensive document provides an in-depth overview of the operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems at JMA.
One of the highlights of this year's update is the detailed description of the new supercomputers that were brought online in March 2023 and March 2024. Unlike previous systems, both new supercomputers were supplied by Fujitsu. One of these systems shares the same A64fx architecture as the renowned Fugaku supercomputer. These advanced systems are expected to significantly enhance the accuracy and efficiency of weather predictions, particularly for typhoons and heavy rainfall.
The combined performance of the new supercomputers is evaluated to be four times more effective than the previous systems.
